Same Day Dental Appointments in Waterloo

Need to see a dentist today, but it isn’t an emergency? Waterloo Dental Centre offers same day dental appointments at our office at 258 King St N in uptown Waterloo, for check-ups, cleanings and the small problems that shouldn’t sit for weeks. Call 519-883-0505 in the morning and we’ll tell you what’s open. Walk-ins are welcome too.

Plenty of people find out on a Tuesday that Tuesday is their only free afternoon this month. Others have a filling that’s felt rough for a while, or they’ve just moved to Waterloo and want a dentist before something goes wrong. A same day booking is meant for exactly that kind of visit.

What a same day appointment in Waterloo can cover

If there’s a spot in the schedule, we can usually fit in:

  • A check-up with an exam and any X-rays the dentist needs
  • A routine teeth cleaning and check-up
  • A small filling, or a look at a filling that feels rough or sensitive
  • Recementing a crown that has come loose, as long as the crown itself is intact
  • A look at a cracked denture, or a simple adjustment to one that rubs
  • A consultation about cosmetic dentistry, an extraction, or a treatment another office recommended
  • A second opinion on a treatment plan you’ve been given

Something that hurts badly, is swelling or follows an accident is a different matter. Our emergency dentist in Waterloo page covers first aid and what to expect, and you should call us right away.

What usually needs a second visit

A same day appointment gets you seen and gets the plan started. Some treatment simply takes longer than one slot, or needs a dental lab. These usually get booked as a follow-up:

  • New crowns and bridges, part of our dental restorations, which are made to fit after the tooth is prepared
  • Root canal treatment that needs more than one sitting
  • Several fillings at once, which we spread out so you’re not numb for hours
  • Surgical tooth extractions and wisdom teeth, which we plan around X-rays and your medical history
  • New dentures or partials
  • Gum disease treatment such as scaling and root planing, often done one section of the mouth at a time

Before you leave, we’ll tell you what’s been done, what’s still needed, and roughly how many appointments it will take.

How to book a same day visit

  1. Call early. Phone 519-883-0505 as soon as you know you’d like to come in. Openings come up when other patients reschedule, so the earlier you call, the more choice you have.
  2. Or send a text. Text (519) 904-4431 with your name, what you’d like done and when you’re free, and we’ll reply with a time.
  3. Or walk in. Walk-ins are welcome. You may wait a little if the dentist is with another patient, and calling ahead lets us give you a realistic time.
  4. Bring your details. Your insurance card or plan number, a list of medications, and the name of your last dentist if you’d like us to request your old X-rays.

New patients fill in a short health history when they arrive. It only takes a few minutes, but plan to come a little early.

Same day appointments for students

Our uptown office is a short trip from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, and plenty of Conestoga College students live nearby. Student schedules change every term, so booking the same day, between classes or after a lab, is often easier than planning weeks ahead. If you have dental coverage through Alumo (formerly Studentcare) or another student plan, bring your plan details and we’ll bill it directly. Our dental care for students page has more about student plans.

Exam season is when a lot of problems show up. Stress, late nights and extra coffee can bring on jaw clenching and sensitivity, and a quick check-up early is usually better than waiting until the term ends.

Same day visits for families

We look after kids, adults and seniors, so one call can often cover more than one person. If your child has a check-up due and you’ve been meaning to book your own, ask whether we can see you back to back. Children’s visits tend to go better earlier in the day, before they’re tired, so mention your child’s age when you call and we’ll suggest a time that suits them.

Parents often call the same day because a child says a tooth feels funny or a baby tooth has gone loose and sore. Most of the time it’s a quick look and some reassurance. If it’s more than that, we’ll explain what’s going on in plain words, for you and for your child.

New to Waterloo?

Moving for school or work usually means leaving your dentist behind. A same day check-up is an easy way to get set up here before anything goes wrong. Give us the name of your previous office and we can ask for your records and recent X-rays, so the dentist can see your history and compare it with how your teeth look now.

Insurance, direct billing and CDCP

We bill most dental plans directly, so bring your insurance card or plan number and we’ll send the claim for you. Every plan covers things a little differently, and we’re happy to check what applies to your visit.

Booking on short notice doesn’t change how we handle fees. Before we start anything beyond the exam, we’ll explain what we recommend and the fees involved, and you decide what to go ahead with. If you’d like to check with your insurer first, ask us for an estimate you can send them. For anything your plan doesn’t cover, we accept credit cards and cash.

CDCP patients are welcome. If you’re covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, mention it when you book. Our Canadian Dental Care Plan page explains how it works with our office, and canada.ca has the current program details, which can change.

Nervous about a quick visit?

Some people book same day on purpose, because waiting two weeks just gives them two weeks to worry about it. If dental visits make you tense, tell us when you call. We offer nitrous oxide, which you breathe through a small mask over your nose, and it helps a lot of patients relax during cleanings and fillings.

Same day dental FAQ

Can I get a cleaning today if I’m a new patient?

Often, yes. It depends on how the day is booked. Call or text in the morning and we’ll give you the earliest time we have.

Is a same day appointment the same as an emergency visit?

Not quite. Emergency visits are for pain, swelling, bleeding or injury, and those patients are seen as a priority. A same day appointment is for routine or non urgent care you’d like done soon. If you’re not sure which you need, call and describe the problem.

What if nothing is open today?

We’ll give you the next available time. If the problem gets worse while you wait, call us back and tell us what’s changed.

Can I bring my kids the same day?

Yes. We see children as well as adults. Tell us how many people you’d like to book and we’ll see what times line up.

How long should I set aside?

It depends on what you’re coming in for. Ask when you book and we’ll give you an idea, so you’re not watching the clock between classes or meetings.

Do you need my old X-rays?

They help, but they aren’t required. If your previous dentist has recent X-rays, we can ask for copies, which may save you from having new ones taken.
