New Patient Consultation and Treatment Plans

Our friendly dental team is always ready and eager to welcome new patients to our office. We are proud of the fact that our existing clients often recommend our facility to their family, work colleagues, and friends. In fact, most of our new patients are from personal referrals.

We believe excellent dental health is a crucial part of your overall well-being. This is why our dental professionals offer useful tips on daily brushing, flossing, and diet. Should you require treatment, we will offer you a clear and easy-to-understand treatment plan. Our dentists will discuss any proposed dental treatment with you, along with alternative therapy options available.

Dental Cleaning

Routine dental checkups and teeth cleaning by professionals at least twice every year is the best way for people to keep their smiles white and beautiful. Our professional dental cleaning is aimed at eliminating any stains, removing tartar buildup, and polishing teeth. Deep dental cleanings can help to address problems like periodontitis and gum disease. Dental cleaning is more in-depth and can be split into two different dental appointments based on the patient’s comfort level and the extent of cleaning required.

  • Routine Teeth Cleaning-this is a superficial and regular cleaning that eliminates tartar and stains on the teeth surface.
  • Deep Teeth Cleaning-this is a more intensive dental cleaning that is mainly used for individuals who are in the initial stages of gum disease or gingivitis. It involves root planning and dental scaling.
  • Scaling is basically the removal of tartar from the surface of the tooth, while planing is smoothing the root surfaces and removing any infected parts of the teeth.

Dental (Tooth) Extractions

Tooth extractions or the removal of teeth is usually the last resort, as maintaining a natural tooth in the oral cavity is ideal. Single or multiple extractions can be carried out for a variety of reasons including impaction of the wisdom teeth, pervasive tooth decay, fractured teeth, extra teeth, or creating space to accommodate orthodontic devices like braces. Dental extractions can be divided into two types:

  • Simple Dental Extraction – these extractions are performed on teeth that are fully emerged after applying local anesthetic to the treatment area. Dental instruments are used for elevating the teeth and sever the periodontal ligament. The tooth is then removed using dental forceps.
  • Complicated and Surgical Extractions – these are performed on teeth that are inaccessible or invisible, for instance, un-erupted wisdom teeth. An incision is made in the gum tissue and then a drill is used for removing adjacent bone tissue. In some cases, the tooth can be split into pieces to ensure complete removal.

Elimination of pain is one of the significant benefits of tooth extraction. If an infection is present or the tooth is severely damaged or decayed, extracting the affected tool alleviates discomfort almost immediately. However, further procedures must be performed to replace the extracted tooth since an existing gap can cause other teeth to move out of alignment to fill the space created.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Patients who are in their late teens and early twenties should pay close attention to their oral health because this is the time when wisdom teeth start erupting. If your wisdom teeth erupt, you might need an extraction service.

When wisdom teeth are not extracted, they can cause overcrowding of the teeth or other oral problems. If your wisdom teeth have been bothering you, you should contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease or gum disease is not only harmful to your dental health, but it can also lead to other health problems if allowed to progress without any treatment. We have experienced dentists who can carry out a thorough periodontal evaluation and offer an ideal treatment solution based on your unique periodontal care needs. Periodontal disease may range from simple gum infection to serious disease resulting in significant damage to the bone and soft tissues supporting the teeth.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment or endodontics mainly focuses on the inside of the tooth. Inside each tooth, there is a hollow space that is occupied by the tooth pulp that helps teeth detect cold and heat and this is what keeps the tooth ‘alive.’  Root canal treatment involves creating a small opening in the tooth and then removing the infected or dead pulp and resealing the opening afterward.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the nerve or blood supply of the tooth is infected through injury or decay, eventually causing an abscess. If root canal treatment is not performed, the infection may spread, and the tooth may have to be extracted. At Waterloo Dental Center, we provide professional root canal therapy services. Our dentists are well trained on this dental procedure, and they will ensure a smooth and painless experience.

Veneers and Lumineers

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment option that dentists utilize to cover several aesthetic dental issues. They cover broken or discoloured teeth so that they may look white and glossy.

  • Veneers are usually made from porcelain material and need lots of preparation to get the teeth ready for application.
  • Lumineers are a different brand of veneers that are manufactured by the DenMat dental laboratory. Lumineers are cheaper, thinner, and faster to apply to the teeth.

Dental Veneers and Lumineers are the most popular cosmetic dental option for people who want to enhance their smiles. They are usually secured to the front surface of the teeth to mask different perceived dental imperfections like chips, stains, gaps, and minor misalignments. Veneers are custom-designed to blend perfectly with the surrounding teeth to ensure a natural appearance. The best thing about them is that with proper dental hygiene, porcelain veneers and lumineers can last for decades.

Tooth Fillings

Tooth-coloured fillings or white fillings refer to tooth feelings used to repair the function and look of teeth that have been impaired by tooth decay. Fillings ate mainly used to fill small holes or cavities caused by bacterial acids that eat through the teeth.  If not treated, cavities tend to expand and carve deeper into the teeth, ultimately destroying them. Fillings help to halt the process of tooth decay, saving the tooth and preventing more discomfort and expensive procedures in the future.

Different materials are used for filling, and the type that is used will largely depend on the condition of the tooth, your budget, and the look you desire. Our dental experts will help you choose an option that will optimally restore the functionality and look of your tooth. The most commonly used materials are:

  • Amalgam or silver
  • Resin
  • Porcelain
  • Gold
  • composite

Dentures

Dentures are intended to replace missing gums and teeth, giving the user an enhanced and beautiful smile. The main reason for using a denture is usually partial or complete tooth loss. Since they are removable dental appliances, dentures are designed to help simplify basic tasks like eating and speaking. Our trained dental professionals can develop new denture sets, or they can adjust an existing denture promptly.

Our dental team is highly experienced at crafting high-quality and well-fitting denture sets that will last for many years.

Dental Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are effective for restoring teeth that have been extracted, fallen out, are infected or damaged.

  • A dental crown is just a cap that surrounds the tooth and is used to restore functionality and enhance your smile.
  • A dental bridge is a simple way of replacing a missing tooth without having to undergo surgery or wear dentures. The new tooth will be held in position by two crowns and will look natural since it is made of porcelain or ceramic material that matches the surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns can restore the functionality of your teeth, making it easy for an individual to speak, drink, and eat like normal. Crowns are perfect for people who suffer from extremely sensitive teeth, have chipped or cracked teeth, or have gone through a root canal.  Similarly, a dental bridge will make it possible for an individual to speak and eat with ease without worrying about the new tooth falling out or becoming loose.

Dental crowns and bridges are ideal for people with an active lifestyle and do not want to be limited by their teeth.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral, which helps prevent tooth decay and sometimes even reverse it. Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel – the hard and shiny outer part of the teeth, which protects the more vulnerable and softer dentin beneath. Fluoride can also re-mineralize small micro-cavities before they develop into larger cavities that can cause major problems.

Our dentists recommend fluoride treatment as a major preventative measure for both adults and children.

Fissure Sealant Services

Brushing and flossing your teeth daily helps to eliminate large amounts of plaque and food particles. However, some people usually have crannies and nooks in the teeth that floss or a toothbrush cannot reach, especially on the molars.  Dental fissure sealant treatment is a perfect way of protecting your teeth from decay before plaque and bacteria start forming cavities.

The sealant helps to seal out bacteria and food particles from the crevices with its thin, plastic coating giving the enamel additional protection against decay. Dental sealant treatment is recommended for children after they get their permanent molars. However, adults that do not have fillings or decay can also benefit immensely from this additional shield against the enamel degrading food particles and bacteria.

Tooth Contouring and Reshaping

Tooth Contouring and Reshaping is a dental procedure used to correct chipped, crooked, or irregularly shaped or overlapping teeth. This technique is used to alter the position, shape, and length of your teeth. Contouring and reshaping can also help to correct minor issues with your bite. Tooth reshaping and contouring are quick dental procedures with very little or no discomfort. This means that aesthetics are not necessary, and the whole process usually takes about one to three visits.

Custom-made Sport Guards

Sports guards or mouth guards are essential pieces of safety equipment for sports. They help to prevent individuals from injuring or losing their teeth when participating in sporting activities. Custom sports guards are prescribed and produced by dentists to perfectly fit the patient’s mouth. Since they are built from a model of the individual’s mouth, custom sports guards offer a more comfortable and secure fit. The mouth guard is likely to stay in position and will enable the athlete to breathe and speak normally.

Most patients believe that mouthguards are only meant for contact sports where athletes may be running or hitting each other, for instance, football and basketball. However, we also recommend sports guards for other sports that are considered non-contact or solo sports, such as:

  • Soccer
  • Rollerblading
  • Mountain biking
  • Gymnastics
  • Volleyball

Dental X-Rays

Dental radiographs or X-rays are crucial diagnostic and assessment tool for dental professionals. Dental X-rays can help to detect trouble early on in the teeth, jaw, gums, and mouth. X-rays can easily pass through soft tissues of the mouth and face but are absorbed by hard materials like bone and teeth. This enables dentists to see existing oral health problems that are not visible from the outside. With X-rays, our dentists can find cavities, look at tooth roots, assess possible gum disease problems, analyze the positioning of the jaw and teeth, check the health of bone that surrounds the tooth, and keep track of the teeth development in younger patients.

Treating oral problems before they become serious can save pain, money, and even life. At our Waterloo Dental Center, we provide modern dental X-rays both for the efficiency of dental treatment and for your convenience.

OPG – Panoramic Digital – X-ray

Orthopantomography or OPG X-ray is a form of x-ray scan that provides a wide or panoramic view of the upper and lower jaw. This X-ray gives a two-dimensional view of a half-circle from one ear to another. An OPG can display all teeth on the two jaws on a single film, including teeth that have not erupted like wisdom teeth.

Orthopantomography is a method used in dentistry that allows the dentist to view all teeth of the patient. As a result, they can determine the position and number of teeth, growth and even those that are yet to erupt.  An OPG X-ray can be done to detect the presence or even assess wisdom teeth development, plan orthodontic treatment, examine the jaw bone, and check the development of a child’s teeth and jaw. This x-ray is also used to examine the jaw joint, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or craniomandibular articulation (CMA), particularly for those who grind their teeth.

Oral Cancer Screening

The most important battle against any type of cancer is early detection, and this is no different when it comes to mouth cancer. In the early stages, oral cancer does not always cause symptoms. This is why screening is important to help detect any potential problems before they cause sensations or become visible to the naked eyes. Keep in mind that when detected early, mouth cancer has a survival rate of about 80 to 90%. Even those who do not smoke should remember that 25% of mouth cancer diagnoses are from non-smokers. To reduce your chances of late diagnosis, you can take our pain-free and simple oral cancer screening.

The common risk factors for mouth cancer include:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Age-with people over 40 years old being at a higher risk
  • Poor diet
  • HPV or human papillomavirus
  • Tobacco use, including dip, chewing, or smoking
